ROAD CRASH CLAIMS 13 LIVES ON LAGOS - IBADAN EXPRESSWAY
The Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps has announced a fatal crash along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The crash, which occurred around Sapade near Ogere Ogun State on Wednesday 13 November, 2019 at about 5 pm was said to have claimed no fewer than 13 lives.
In a release signed by Florence Okpe, the Route
Commander Public Education Officer of the Command, the accident took place where
a diversion was created by the construction company currently working on
rehabilitating the Lagos-Ibadan corridor.
The fatal crash involved a total of 37 persons,
comprising 20 male adults, 15 female adults and two female children.
The people injured in the crash were put at 10,
comprising four male adults and six female adults, in which unfortunately 13 persons
were dispatched to the great beyond. Those who lost their lives include four male
adults, seven female adults and two female children.
The unfortunate incident involved three vehicles
comprising a truck heading towards the Lagos axis of the Expressway which suddenly
suffered a tyre burst and in the process collided head-on with two other
speeding commuter buses heading towards the Ibadan axis of the Expressway, with
one of them in the process attempting to wrongfully overtake within the
diversion area.
The details of the vehicles were given as, KTU 93 XW a yellow
coloured Mazda bus, the second being a white Toyota bus with registration
number KEY 847 XA. The third a vehicle with registration number KA B97 XA, a Man
Diesel truck.
The Sector Commander FRSC Ogun State Command, Clement
Oladele has expressed deep shock over the incident and has commiserated with
relations of the crash victims.
The Sector Commander requested relations of the crash
victims to contact the FRSC Command in Ogere Ogun State or the Victory Hospital
Ogere, where the victims were rescued, for medical treatment.
The corpses of the victims have been deposited at the
Ipara Mortuary. Ogun State and the obstruction being cleared with the aid of
RCC, the construction company supporting rescue operations with their heavy
duty equipment, to restore traffic.
“This incident would have been avoided where motorists
driving along diversion areas at construction zones, observe maximum speed
limit of 50 kilometres per hour and
avoid overtaking till clearly out of diversion areas to avoid head on collision.
“Passengers inside vehicles being driven recklessly
should always caution their drivers and where they refused to be cautioned, the
FRSC should be contacted on the FRSC toll free number 122,” the Sector
Commander said in the release.
